Rethink, Repurpose, Reuse: Free Plastic Bag Day

Share

As part of our unwavering commitment to reducing plastic waste, oceansix proudly supports Free Plastic Bag Day. This day serves as a critical reminder to rethink our dependence on everyday items, particularly plastic bags. The stark reality is that each plastic bag is used for an average of just 12 minutes, yet it takes centuries to decompose.

Up to 5 trillion plastic bags are used globally every year, with only 1% recycled. This results in billions of plastic bags polluting our environment, severely impacting marine and terrestrial life.

Unfortunately, all the plastic ever created still exists in some form. Over time, plastic degrades into micro and nano-plastics, contaminating our water, soil, and food supplies. This pervasive pollution not only endangers wildlife but also poses a significant threat to human health as these microplastics infiltrate the food chain.

As conscious consumers, we must champion initiatives and products that set new standards, transforming sustainable practices from exceptions to norms.

On this significant day, we encourage you to reflect on the impact of plastic waste and find innovative ways to repurpose items within your home. By embracing reuse, we can dramatically reduce waste, minimise our environmental footprint, and safeguard the diverse life forms that share our planet.

At oceansix, we encourage everyone to embrace the Zero Waste Movement’s five Rs, introduced by Bea Johnson, as a comprehensive framework to diminish our plastic footprint and promote a circular economy.

  1. Refuse: Say no to unnecessary products, especially single-use plastics. By refusing items we don’t need, we can prevent waste from being generated in the first place.
  2. Reduce: Cut down on what you own and need. Simplify your life by donating items you no longer use, which helps reduce overall consumption and waste.
  3. Reuse: Discover new uses for items you already have, even if they aren’t perfect. Reusing and repurposing extend the lifecycle of products, reducing the need for new resources.
  4. Recycle: Properly recycle paper, glass, metal, and plastic, though recycling should be a last resort. Always prioritise refusing and reusing before recycling to minimise waste effectively.
  5. Rot: Compost organic waste to enrich the soil. Composting returns valuable nutrients to the earth and significantly reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills.

By integrating these principles into our daily lives, we can create a more sustainable future.

Together, let’s drive the change towards reusing, repurposing, and reducing waste.
